API 5L encompasses both welded and seamless pipe crafted from steel material, ranging from standard-weight to extra-strong varieties that are thread-bearing.
API 5L line pipe is crafted rigorously to meet precise material grade specifications with no need for welding – consequentially, resulting in a slightly weaker pipe in comparison to its welded counterpart.
API 5L line pipe, held together with welding, is formed when metal plate is rolled and the edges are fused together. However, the weld that secures the pipe weakens the area where it has been joined.
API 5L is an ideal medium of transportation for gas, oil, and water; however, caution must be exercised when transporting highly corrosive substances, as it is not optimal for this purpose.
Grade A25, A, B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, and X80 are the levels encompassed by the API 5L specifications. Following the “X” is a numerical value denoting the Minimum Yield Strength (in 000’s psi) that a pipe must meet in order to comply with this grade.
