Seamless pipe classification is largely determined based on various standards. This type of hollow section is primarily employed to transport fluids. It can be found incorporated into the manufacture of components for machinery and structures, such as component parts for oil wells, automobile transmission shafts, bicycle frames and building scaffolds. Its ability to transmit fluids in large quantities or at high levels of pressure makes it ideal for deployment in chemical or power plants.

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) categorizes seamless pipes based on varying standards. Grade A is the pinnacle of quality, commonly used in high-pressure and extreme temperature conditions. Falling below Grade A is Grade B, accommodating moderate-pressure and temperature applications. At the bottom of the three grades is Grade C, manufactured for low-pressure and temperature applications.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) is renowned for their criteria which grades seamless pipe according to different standards. Notably, two quality levels prevail – API 5L, the highest quality which is frequently deployed in situations requiring robust pressures and temperatures, and API 5CT, the secondary standard of excellence typically used in applications with moderated demands of this nature.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) classifies seamless pipes with three distinct qualities. SAE J526 is the superior choice, used in challenging conditions that require high pressures and temperatures. Second in rank is SAE J527, utilized in moderate settings such as those featuring moderate-pressure and moderate-temperature requirements. The last grade is SAE J528 which is suited for environments with low pressures and temperatures.

Seamless pipe is categorized according to different standards by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). These classifications range from the highest quality, ASTM A106, which typically serves in applications where high-pressure and high-temperature levels are at play, to the next highest grade of ASTM A53, which is usually used in moderate-pressure and moderate-temperature applications. Finally, ASTM A333 stands for the lowest grade and finds application most often in settings with low-pressure and low-temperature requirements.

Seamless pipe is ranked according to the British Standard (BS). The highest quality is BS 3602-1, typically used in settings where pressure and temperature are high. One level down is BS 3603-1 which works best in moderate temperature and pressure scenarios. The lowest grade, BS 3604-1, is intended for use in areas where conditions are low.

Distinct categories of seamless pipe exist within the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), each exhibiting distinct characteristics based on grade and purpose. Of the three grades, JIS G3441 is the most superior option, often favoured in intense environments such as in high-pressure and high-temperature situations. The second highest quality – JIS G3444 – is suitable for moderate-pressure and moderate-temperature contexts, while the lowest grade, JIS G3445, is commonly employed in low-pressure and low-temperature scenarios.

When selecting a material to make seamless pipe from, the intended application of the pipe must be taken into account. The most common materials are carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel alloy, and titanium. Carbon steel is the most popular choice for low-pressure, low-temp projects. Stainless steel is usually employed for moderate-pressure and moderate-temperature undertakings. Nickel alloy is used when dealing with high-pressure and high-temperature applications. For extremely intense pressure and high temperatures, titanium is the material of choice for constructing seamless pipe.
