hot expand seamless steel pipe

From a single solid steel round billet heated to extreme temperatures, seamless steel pipes are shaped through a pushing or pulling process called mandrel. The finishing touches done on these pipes range from 1/8 inches to 26 inches in diameter and wall thickness. Consisting of iron and carbon, Carbon Steel Seamless Pipes / Tubes are known for their distinct properties which is affected by the percentage of carbon in the alloy. The more carbon is in the steel alloy, the stronger, harder, and more durable it becomes, usually having between 0.30% and 1.70%. To modify their size and shape further, the hot expanding process is often used which involves heating the pipe to an appropriate temperature before expanding it evenly with pressure.

Two types of hot expanding processes exist for seamless steel pipes: internal pressure expansion which involves heating the pipe in a perforated container so that it broadens under its own pressure, and external pressure expansion where the pipe is heated to the suitable temperature and then forced to expand using pressure applied to the mould it’s in.

The hot expanding process associated with seamless steel pipe construction is advantageous for a variety of reasons. Not only does it fast-track the manufacturing process, but it also has been observed to guard against excessive energy usage and material wastage, as well as cut down on eventual expenditure. This practice of hot expanding can likewise be implemented to facilitate production of seamless steel pipe of many diversified materials and specifications.

The expansion of seamless steel pipe is usually completed with a hot expanding machine. This machine consists of a furnace, the expander for the seamless steel pipe, a container or mold featuring small holes, and a cooling system.

The creation of seamless steel pipe is achieved through a process of expansion – one that stands out for its intense heat. Here are the essential steps involved:

Seamless steel pipes manufactured adhere to all applicable national standards.

Seamless steel pipes require a heat treatment that typically encompasses either normalizing or normalizing plus tempering.

Cavities in a metal mold or other specially designed holder are filled with seamless steel pipes, which are then submitted to a furnace for the required period of fractional intensity heating.

Heating the seamless steel pipe to the right temperature is necessary before using the seamless steel pipe expander to bring it into its desired form.

Subsequently, to complete the fabrication process, a cooling system is utilized to cool down the expanded seamless steel pipe.

After the seamless steel pipe is cooled, the process of removal from either the perforated container or mould begins followed by surface treatment, inspection, and then lastly packaging.
