emt tubing thickness

In the USA, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has determined the necessary dimensions for medical equipment, with a distinct focus on tubing thickness. Specifically, for medical devices such as IV lines and catheters, ANSI has prescribed an outer diameter of precisely 0.030 inches (0.762 mm).

While the industry standard for the thickness of tubing is typically 0.062 inches (1.57 mm), some producers have opted for thinner models—manufacturing tubing as thin as 0.020 inches (0.508 mm). Such a fine example of their craft can be found in IV lines and catheters.

Thinner tubing has numerous advantages when utilized in medical equipment. Cost production is markedly reduced as opposed to thicker tubing, and the resulting construct is suitable for much smaller devices, such as micro-catheters.

For certain medical tasks, flexibility may be an indispensable feature of the tubing that is used. While thinner solutions offer increased maneuverability, they can be susceptible to bending and folding, which could obstruct the functionality of the device.

Although the use of thin-walled tubing for medical devices has provoked a debate among experts, some maintain that it can be employed safely if managed with proper regard. Conversely, others are wary of such tubing and support the notion that it is more prone to complications.

Despite being advantageous for certain medical needs, thinner tubing is particularly prone to kinking and collapsing, rendering it helpless in some scenarios. On the other hand, thicker tubing offers significantly more flexibility— a boon for some medical procedures.

The implications of thinner tubing utilized as an element of medical devices has sparked debate among professionals. While a few have countered its use, claiming that the narrower design causes an increased risk of issues, others avow that it can be employed judiciously if the proper precautions are taken.
